Community Education and Outreach
Project CAT has been a unifying theme linking the K-12 curriculum across grade levels and subject areas.  Students, primarily 8th - 12th graders under the supervision of science teacher Trish Griswold, have been working with professionals in the field of wildlife biology to conduct real scientific research in the Upper Kittitas County.  Now in its 8th and final year, Project CAT has touched students of almost every grade level, many participating in cougar captures led by WDFW research scientist Gary Koehler and WSU graduate student Ben Maletzke, where animals are collared to monitor their movement patterns.  Each year students help develop a research question pertaining to the cougars and their habitat. Students conduct community outreach through a program called "Cougarwise" where they present their research results and on wildlife awareness.  Several of these students have participated in public presentations at the Washington Science Teachers Association, WSU and as far away as the Mountain Lion Workshop in Wyoming and Idaho as well as the Carnivore Conference in Florida.
